First, if I want to purchase, there are as many solutions out there for necklace hangers as there are necklaces… so I was really more confused than anything. I thought maybe making one would be a little more personal. So we’ll look at both options here and depending on what you’re needs are, you’ll be armed with enough information to find the best solution possible.

Types of Necklace Hangers to Purchase

Most people with jewelry have a jewelry box, but most jewelry boxes don’t accommodate necklaces very well. Mostly they just end up in a big wad of a tangled mess. Finding a jewelry box that has necklace hangers makes the box more of a cabinet; for this most times you’ll want to purchase a separate jewelry necklace hanger specifically for necklaces. Most hangers will attach to the wall somehow, and there are also many ways to make your own, which we’ll get to below. But first lets look at a few of the most common hanger styles available for purchase.

Wall Mount

The wall mounted necklace display or hanger is popular because it doesn’t take up valuable dresser or counter space and can be mounted just about anywhere. These basically look like small coat hangers and pretty much work the same way.

Dresser or Counter

The dresser or counter styles are sometimes referred to as necklace displays as their often used in retail stores to showcase jewelry. However, you can find some that basically have several rings facing outward on the top of a stand. This is actually the type that my wife has. The downside of these type is the necklaces still seem to get tangled.

Making Your Own Necklace Hanger
There’s a lot of resources on the internet that show you how to make your own jewelry necklace hanger. But one idea that caught our eye was the use of an old picture frame. Basically you find an old picture frame, remove the picture, and cover the back with a type of screen or something that you can attach hangers to. Some suggest using Fish Hook type earrings, pushing them through the mess (window screen works well) and then using them to hang the necklaces from. You can also use heavy gauged wire or some type of fish hook picture hangers to add hangers along the bottom of the frame. This looks nice and is quite crafty, but it doesn’t hold too many necklaces. The problem with most necklace hangers is when you start hanging a lot of jewelry from them, the necklaces start piling up on each other and become tangled.

Another great option is to find key ring hangers that can be used to hang necklaces. If you find something that is stylish and looks good, you can use several of them; attaching them to the wall (staggering) them one above the other. We’ve also seen people make hangers out of plastic clothes hangers with safety pins attached with hooks to hold the necklaces. It’s not a very elegant solution, but it works.

We searched around a lot for great hanger ideas, and this was the best one we found (using a curtain rod with simple S hooks):

• What Kind of jewelry does she like?
  When shopping for girls jewelry boxes, knowing what style of jewelry your girl likes will help. Here’s an example. Say she likes turquoise, odds are she likes natural stones, which you can tell by looking around at any jewelry she has purchased for herself. Armed with that information, most jewelry box retailers will be able to help you in picking out the right jewelry box. Now this information alone may not provide the exact taste of your girl, but it will hope when putting that information together with these other categories.
• What type of furniture does your girl like or have?
  Does your girl like old fashioned wood or more modern type furniture? What type of jewelry accessories does she already own or like? A man should really pay attention and be aware of what styles his girl likes. Odds are your girl may already have a jewelry box of some kind, find out what she does or doesn’t like about that particular box.
• The next time you’re out shopping together, try and see if you can get her around some jewelry boxes (this shouldn’t be too hard). But try not to make it obvious what you’re doing! Just casually start looking at them, act like you’re interested in them and when she comes over to take a look, ask her some subtle questions like, “what do you think about this one?” or “I’m not sure I like these frilly edges, what about you?”OK, if you never go shopping with your girl, you may have a hard time pulling this one off without it looking obvious.
• Ask one of her friends what she likes.
• If it’s for your daughter, again, ask one of her friends what she likes.

When purchasing a jewelry box, especially for an older girl, it’s important to get something she likes. But remember, it is a gift and by putting some thought into it, we’re sure she’ll be excited and happy to get whatever you buy. • Fetpak – Has a little bit of everything in the jewelry box category. From simple cardboard boxes to classy velvet jewelry boxes. Its seems if you’re looking for wholesale jewelry boxes that fit the more arts and crafts type this may be where you end up. Although Fetpak offers a large variety, their website has a lot to be desired and is difficult to navigate. Although they do offer significant price savings if your order exceeds 1,000 items. It was not obvious right away if the buyer can get personalized gift/jewelry boxes in the smaller sizes so we’re not sure if that option is available here. Honestly their website just made us want to leave.
• Noble Packaging – This site we really enjoy for wholesale jewelry boxes. The categories are easy to navigate and it seems that every item has the option of custom imprinting which makes personalizing your jewelry and gift boxes easy. Noble also has many designer lines and offers all types of boxes from velvet, wood, to leather. Although you may spend a little bit more here, most items are great quality.
• JewelrySupply.com – The first thing we noticed about jewelrysupply.com was the unique categories of wholesale jewelry boxes. From crystal type boxes to cute little boxes with roses on the lids, they have a lot of unique inventory. Another nice feature is they list with every item what your savings are for purchasing in larger quantities. From velvet to rosewood veneer they have a little bit of everything. The ability to customize the packaging wasn’t easily found and we did not notice it during the checkout process. We’ve sent them an email to inquire about their customization services and will update this when we hear back from them.

Most jewelry box wholesalers will provide you with many different options (leather jewelry boxes, wooden jewelry boxes, etc.) for you to package your jewelry and gifts. We’ve seen some pretty unique uses for jewelry boxes also, meaning they don’t have to be used just for selling or presenting jewelry.

For one, wouldn’t the term mean jewelry as a gift in some type of box? That’s sort of what we thought, which would be along the lines of what we first mentioned. Most often when you purchase a piece of jewellry from a jewelry store they’re going to put it in some type of box for you. So why would anyone want to search the internet for that type of box when they’re getting one already? Most generally, jewelry store owners would search the internet looking for wholesalers of ring boxes or gift boxes which can be customized for their particular store. But, on other occasions, there a lot more to some of these boxes than what you get from your local jeweler.

Say you found a great deal on a piece of lovely jewelry while traveling and needed something magnificent to present it in. You could go online and find that perfect gift box! A good rule of thumb however, if you’re purchasing a gift box for just presentation purposes, the gift box should not cost more than the jewelry. However, you may find that a gift box for the jewelry your giving could add to the value of the gift. Like say you purchased one of the cool wooden jewelry boxes with the new jewelry tucked inside as a surprise. Thus two great gifts in one! Or one of the nice travel sized leather jewelry boxes is another great idea!

There is a fine line between a jewelry gift box that is just for presentation, and one that is to be functional after the gift of jewelry is given. So you really need to put some thought into what exactly your gift box is going to be used for. If it’s just a one time presentation piece, use something simple. However, if you want the box to be remembered years from now as much as the jewelry it contained, then look for some a little more functional with drawers, necklace hanger, or if it’s a ring, maybe a small ring box made to hold many rings.

Just like wooden jewelry boxes, leather boxes come in all shapes and sizes and with different features depending on what you’re looking for. One thing that stands out with the leather jewelry box is, they seem to be geared more for travel and on the go jewelry storage then the other jewelry box categories. That’s not to say there is not some very fancy leather boxes out there. Most leather boxes have straps or fold close with a latch and have handles for traveling.

Leather jewelry boxes range in price from under $75 to several hundred. The boxes are actually made out of wood or some other composite material and then wrapped with leather. Some of the different types of leather you’ll see on these boxes are suede and died leather of all colors.

A few of our favorite leather jewelry boxes  are:

• Marilyn Leather Jewelry Box/Case – This lists for around $50 through most online retailers and is stylish, petite, and great for travel. But can also work good for home also. The powder blue color is very popular plus it’s got crocodile textured accents in the darker leather.
  
• Milano Leather Jewelry Box/Case – Most women are familiar with the Milan’s famous fashion houses, this jewelry box is reminiscent of those old fashion houses. One thing about this box is that classic style and looks with jewelry boxes never seem to go out of style. This is one of our favorites and you really can’t go wrong with it. This box generally sales for around $75, so you’re still under $100 but are getting many great features including areas for rings, earrings, bracelets, and necklaces.
  
• Cheyenne Leather Jewelry Box/Case – We love this leather box because it resembles a small suitcase yet is still stylish in it’s look. It has tan light suede on the exterior and interior with dark brown leather accents. Another really cool feature of this box is the small vanity mirror located just inside. This is our favorite for it’s combination of style and practicality. You can find this leather jewelry case for around $55 making it a great gift for the price.
  

These are only a few of the large variety of leather jewelry boxes but give you a general idea of what to look for. We’ve listed a few of our favorites and hope you find that box that’s perfect for your loved one.

1. Is the jewelry box for a man or a women? Women generally like the more elegant wooden boxes (big shocker we know). Men in general, like the darker wood. We’re not sure why, maybe has something to do with hunting lodges… who knows.
2. How Large? This question comes into play no matter what type of jewelry box you’re looking at. Will it be a counter or dresser top box or free standing?

Is it rustic or frilly? Does it have an antique feel or more modern? Just because a jewelry box is wood does not mean cannot be dainty and elegant. Many wooden jewelry boxes have ornate designs, pearls, ivory, or stained glass worked into their design. Again, you’ll want to pay attention to the amount of rings vs. necklaces she has which will help you purchase one that will work well for holding their jewelry.
